NXF UNS N10276 2.4819/NiMo16Cr15W/C276 Nickel Alloy OD ASME B16.9 Butt-Welding Lap Joint Stub End
C276 Introduction
Super alloys or high performance alloys are available in a variety of shapes and contain elements in different combinations to obtain a specific result. These alloys are of three types that include iron-based, cobalt-based and nickel-based alloys. The nickel-based and cobalt-based super alloys are available as cast or wrought based alloys according to composition and application.Super alloys have good oxidation and creep resistance and can be strengthened by precipitation hardening, solid-solution hardening and work hardening methods. They can also function under high mechanical stress and high temperatures and also in places that require high surface stability.
HASTELLOY(r) C276 is a wrought corrosion-resistant alloy that resists the development of grain boundary precipitates that degrade corrosion resistance.
Butt-Welding Lap Joint Stub End Introduction
A Butt-Welding Lap Joint Stub End is a pipe fitting used exclusively with a Lap Joint Flange (Loose Flange) to create a flanged connection. The stub end is butt-welded to the pipe, while the backing flange remains free to rotate behind it.
1. Structure and Mechanism
* Hub (Barrel): The straight section butt-welded directly to the process pipe.
* Lap (Flange Face): The raised gasket surface. The loose flange pushes against the back of this lap to compress the gasket.
* Key Logic: Fluid only touches the stub end, never the backing flange.
2. Length Standard (ASME B16.9)
* Pattern A (Long): Standard long hub with a larger fillet radius to match industrial Lap Joint Flanges perfectly.
* Pattern B (Short): Ultra-short hub with a tight corner radius designed to pair with regular Slip-on Flanges used as backing
flanges.
3. Key Benefits
* Cost Savings: Only the stub end needs to match expensive corrosion-resistant piping (e.g., Stainless Steel). The backing flange can be cheap Carbon Steel.
* Easy Alignment: Since the backing flange rotates 360 degrees, bolt holes can be aligned effortlessly during field installation.
* Faster Maintenance: Simplifies assembly in systems requiring frequent teardowns for cleaning.

Butt Welding Lap Joint Stub End Processing
Butt-Welding Lap Joint Stub End Processing combines tube flaring, hot forging, and precision machining. Because the joint transition bears the full clamping force of the bolts, manufacturing must ensure uniform wall thickness and defect-free fillets.
1. Core Forming Methods
* Flaring & Flanging (Seamless Tubes): Used for NPS 1/2" to 12". The tube end is cut, flared with a tapered punch, and axially pressed 90° into a flat lip. This is done cold for thin-wall stainless steel or hot for heavy-walled carbon steel.
* Die Forging (High-Pressure / Heavy-Wall): Solid bars or forgings are stamped directly into a single-piece component. This maintains continuous metal grain flow, maximizing fatigue resistance.
* Welded Ring (Extra-Large Custom Sizes): For diameters over 24", a rolled plate cylinder is welded directly to a custom-cut steel ring flange using full-penetration welding.
2. Standard Production Line
1. Beveling: The straight hub end is machined to a standard 37.5° welding bevel with a 1.6mm land.
2. Face Machining: The front sealing face is turned with a phonographic serrated finish (125–250 AARH) for gasket gripping. The back face is machined flat and square to line up with the loose flange.
3. Fillet Radius Turning: The transition corner is machined precisely. Pattern A requires a larger radius to match standard Lap Joint Flanges; Pattern B is turned sharp to clear Slip-on Flanges.
4. Solution Annealing: Cold-worked stainless steel stub ends are heated to ~1040°C and rapidly quenched to relieve stress and restore corrosion resistance.
3. Inspection & Quality Control
* Lap Thinning Check: Ultrasonic testing verifies that the outer edge of the lip has not thinned beyond allowable limits
(typically remains (ge ) 95% of nominal pipe thickness).
* Fillet NDT: Dye Penetrant (PT) or Magnetic Particle (MT) testing checks the high-stress corner for micro-cracks.
* Dimensional Audit: Final inspection measures total length, lap outside diameter (O.D.), and squareness.
