UNS S3040 304/1.4301 Stainless Steel Introduction

UNS S30400 (commonly referred to as 304 stainless steel, European standard designation 1.4301) is the most widely used general-purpose austenitic stainless steel, with a balanced combination of corrosion resistance, formability, weldability and mechanical properties that makes it the global industry benchmark for stainless steel applications. It offers superior atmospheric and general media corrosion resistance over 400 series ferritic and martensitic stainless steels, and is widely used in food processing, architectural decoration, chemical equipment, water treatment and daily hardware scenarios.
Machinability
Stainless steel grade UNS S30400 304/1.4301 has machinability characteristics that are typical of standard austenitic stainless steels; however it requires consistent cutting speeds, sufficient feed rates, and high machine rigidity due to its moderate work hardening rate during machining. It is recommended that sharp, wear-resistant carbide tooling optimized for austenitic stainless steels be used.
Forming
Stainless steel grade UNS S30400 304/1.4301 can be formed using the same conventional cold and hot forming methods applied for other austenitic stainless steels. It has excellent ductility, requiring lower forming force than high-alloy austenitic grades,and is highly adaptable to deep drawing, bending and stamping processes. Hot forging can be done at 1150-1260°C (2100-2300°F).
Welding
Welding of stainless steel grade UNS S30400 304/1.4301 can be performed using all traditional fusion and resistance joining processes. Recommended filler metal should be AWS E308L/ER308L for most general applications.
Caution should be taken while using autogenous welding for thick sections (over 6mm) or components serving in strongly corrosive environments, due to the risk of chromium carbide precipitation and reduced intergranular corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone; post-weld solution annealing is recommended for these critical scenarios.
Heat Treatment

Final solution annealing process performed for optimal performance in most applications, is done at 1010-1100°C
(1850-2010°F),which is followed by rapid water quenching. In case this material is used in a strongly corrosive
environment,annealing should be done at the upper end of the temperature range (1060-1100°C / 1940-2010°F) to ensure full carbide dissolution.This austenitic alloy cannot be hardened by thermal heat treatment, only through cold working.

Socket Welding Flanges Introduction

Socket welding flanges (SW flanges) are connection components mainly used in high-pressure, small-diameter (typically less than NPS 2) piping systems. Their most distinctive feature is a stepped socket inside the flange neck. After the pipe is inserted into the socket, an external fillet weld is performed on the flange neck.

1. Raw Material Preparation and Cutting Material Selection:

Select carbon steel (e.g., A105), stainless steel (e.g., A182,F304/F316), or alloy steel according to requirements.

Cutting: Use a saw, plasma cutter, or laser cutter to cut the steel billet into cylindrical segments of the predetermined weight.

2. Pre-Forging Heating

The segments are placed in a heating furnace and heated to the forging temperature (usually between 1000°C and 1300°C, depending on the material) to increase the metal's plasticity.

3. Die Forging (Core Step)

Die Forging: The heated metal is placed into a pre-made die, and a press or forging hammer is used to apply enormous pressure, causing it to fill the die cavity and form the rough outline of the flange. Drilling and Trimming: A central through hole is punched out and excess flash is removed.

4. Heat Treatment Normalizing/Annealing:

Eliminates internal stresses generated during forging and refines the grain size. Carbon steel typically requires normalizing (A105N) to improve low-temperature impact toughness. Quenching/Tempering: For alloy steel, quenching increases hardness, followed by tempering to balance toughness.

5. Machining (CNC)

This is the most critical step determining the function of the socket flange, mainly including: Fine machining of the sealing surface: Machining the sealing grooves of the raised face (RF) or ring joint face (RTJ). Machining the socket: Precisely cutting the socket depth and diameter for insertion into the pipe. The socket diameter is typically 0.25mm larger than the pipe's outer diameter to ensure a proper weld fit. Drilling: Using a CNC drilling machine,precisely drill bolt holes according to standards (such as ASME B16.5).

6. Surface Treatment and Cleaning Pickling:

Removing surface oxide scale. Corrosion Protection: Carbon steel flanges are typically oiled, painted, or galvanized for rust prevention.

7. Inspection and Packaging Dimensional Inspection:

Use calipers to verify the socket depth, outer diameter, thickness, etc.Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Use ultrasonic or magnetic particle testing to check for internal cracks or porosity. Marking and Warehousing: Mark the pressure rating, material, dimensions, and furnace number on the outside of the flange with steel stamps.
